As you may learn later on from reading my posts, I often have horrible taste in movies (much like my sister). I will watch almost anything and if I don't enjoy it completely, I at least am able to have a good time making fun of it. I don't know exactly what this says about me, but I like to think that it makes me a more cultured individual, able to embrace all different forms of art & find the good in the crap....or it just means it doesn't take much to entertain me.
I have only ever walked out of/not finished 6 movies I can think of, which I guess sounds like a lot, but factor in a lifetime of movie-watching and the fact that I got to see movies for free for 2 years in college, and it isn't that much:
1. 8 Mile. I am sorry. But this movie is crap. Total crap. It was so hyped and then....crap. I just can't get on board.
2. Friday Night Lights. I am typically all about "hard-luck sports team, rah! rah!, fighting against the odds" movies (See: Remember The Titans), but the camera work + the never-ending football game scenes were more than enough reason to stop watching to me- it was like sitting through an entire football game in real time. And I do not enjoy sports THAT much. If I did, I would watch ESPN.
3. Saw. Barf. Bad acting, sick and twisted plot. VOMIT. And I vomit on the 50 billion sequels as well, although I have not seen them.
4. The Pink Panther (2006). Beyonce? Really? She should have never been in Austin Powers, either. Plus, this movie was so NOT funny, I felt embarrassed for the actors, which I am pretty sure was not intended effect. Hollywood apparently does not care what I think, as a sequel just came out.
5. Borat. I will admit the first half of this movie is pretty funny. But once 2 men started rolling around naked all over everything...refund please.
6. Cloverfield. I really can't critique the content of this movie as I was doubled-over in my seat, about to literally yarf ALL over everyone, exorcist style. I had to leave after about 20 minutes of the "hand-held/realistic, jiggly camera" effect. (Technically, I was warned: "During the first weekend of the release, many theaters posted signs warning guests that the hand held camera movements may cause motion sickness." -imdb.com.) But still.
Since I'm the one who walked out of 8 Mile with you, you know I agree there.
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen Friday Night Lights, sports movies + me = NO.
I have only seen a little of Saw II but, um, was morbidly fascinated and actually have the original in my Netflix queue. Sorry. You know that I have a weakness for horror movies, no matter how bad.
Haven't seen Pink Panther or Borat because you told me they were bad (but I knew I wouldn't like Borat anyway, due to my grandma-like senseabilities).
And finally, I have to totally disagree on Cloverfield. I thoroughly enjoyed that one, but I saw it at home so that probably cut down on the motion sickness factor considerably. Try it again, you'll like it.
As bad as it IS. And it REALLY IS. I thought Borat was funny. I know, I am ashamed.
ReplyDelete8 mile was okayyy since I am easily entertained despite actor quality. And I did like Friday night lights. I haven't watched Saw or Cloverfield so I can't comment. If the are remotely scary or horror, I don't watch. Am a wuss.
I agree with most of your selection here, except I did like Friday Night Lights.
ReplyDeleteAnd the one movie I hate that everyone seems to love is Napoleon Dynamite.
STOOOOOOOOOOOOOPID!
